Switch Off The Violence

Do you watch television? Do you feel you need to watch the news to keep informed? Think about what you are exposing yourself to on a daily basis. If you are watching images that make you feel anxious or fearful, please reconsider how you want to spend your time. If you are watching the news for example, take into consideration how your body is reacting to all the bad news. Do an inventory of your body. Are you tensing up at the negative images, the horror and insanity? Do you feel good? Do you feel inspired? Now consider, what can you do to change the status of the world? Are you watching a TV show or movie that has death and violence as its focus, and which is falsely labeled entertainment? How does this make you feel?

We need to think about how negativity and violence, even in a subtle way, is entering our life, our thoughts, and think about how it may be affecting our attitude and mood and our perspective of the world. You can accept the bombardment of negative images as normal, or you can make a conscious choice to avoid what isn’t helpful to having a positive attitude and choosing to be content and peaceful on a daily basis. If you open a book that has inspiration and uplifting information, or you take the time you would waste watching another TV sitcom filled with sarcasm or a show that is considered suspense, but is actually about death and violence, and you spend your time in nature, or doing something that you truly love, you will be able to appreciate how much beauty, peace and wonderful people there are in the world.

We are raised in a society that is so accustomed to the latest news as being something that we are to accept as a normal part of our lives, or the violence, even in cartoons, that we let our children watch on a daily basis as OK. When we really stop to reflect on each way negative images are assualting our senses, it is unimaginable that we would continue in the same habit of allowing these outward distractions into our thoughts, our minds, and our lives every day.

In his book, ‘Inspiration, Your Ultimate Calling’ by Dr. Wayne Dyer, I was so happy to see his chapter on ‘Transcending Commonplace Uninspiring Energy.’ For many years I have avoided newspapers like the negative plague they are, and I’m very careful of what I watch and how much time I invest in the television. I’m so sensitive to violence and all the insanity that happens in the world, that I had to take this step in my life to avoid images and stories that were causing me distress. Dr. Dyer in his book on ‘Inspiration’ really reinforced my feelings on this subject. He writes, concerning the news and violence in movies and TV, “We’ve become a fear-based society, and this dread has crept into all facets of our lives, including our entertainment. When we live in fear, inspiration is virtually impossible…Remember that you live in a Universe that operates by the Law of Attraction, so when you live in fear, you actually bring to you what you’re afraid of. Thoughts themselves are an energy…When you find yourself being exposed to media onslaughts that are decidedly uninspiring, listen to your very first impulse and switch off! Turn off the television or radio, leave the movie theater, and affirm: I no longer wish to be in the energy field of anything that isn’t a vibrational match with Spirit.”

God bless Wayne Dyer for his great and important teachings. I’m so happy that there is a book out there that thousands of people are reading and hopefully, discovering for themselves, that in order to have peace, we must make a conscious effort to choose it wisely over the entainment industry and media’s negative bombardment of our senses. I refer to the news, television, and all the violence, horror and degradation it imparts as, “The Devils Toolbox” in terms of the ways it takes people away from the peace, happiness and the positive life that is just waiting to be tapped into. Choose peace! Choose to be inspired!
